Taiwanese Cinema Meets Global Audiences: “BIG”

We were proud to host an unforgettable event that celebrated the transformative power of storytelling, the resilience of the human spirit, and the vibrant richness of Taiwanese cinema. In collaboration with UC San Diego, the North America Taiwanese Film Tour Festival, and Starlux, our foundation presented a free screening of BIG—a profoundly moving film by acclaimed Taiwanese director Wei Te-Sheng.

About the Film: BIG

BIG is set in a pediatric oncology ward, where a group of children bravely face life-threatening illnesses. Through the eyes of these young patients, their families, and the dedicated hospital staff, the film explores the emotional landscape of diagnosis, treatment, and the often-overlooked power of community support. As the families shared their struggles and triumphs, they found solace and strength in one another, painting a touching narrative of courage, hope, and the unwavering endurance of the human spirit.

Wei Te-Sheng, known for his masterful storytelling and ability to capture the essence of Taiwanese culture and humanity, brought a deeply moving and uplifting tale that resonated with audiences of all ages. His previous works, such as Cape No. 7 and Seediq Bale, have established him as one of Taiwan’s most respected filmmakers, and BIG continued this legacy by shedding light on the resilience found in the face of adversity.

We welcomed attendees to this special screening event on Sunday, March 9th, 2024, at 4:00 PM. The event took place at 7838 Wilkerson Ct. in San Diego, CA. Following the screening, there was an exclusive post-screening talk with Director Wei Te-Sheng, who offered valuable insights into the making of BIG and shared the inspirations behind this powerful story.

This was a unique opportunity for attendees to engage with one of Taiwan's most renowned filmmakers and gain a deeper understanding of the film's themes and messages. To make the event even more enjoyable, complimentary lunch boxes were provided for all attendees, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
